ASK YOUR RELATIVE QUESTIONS

Hi Auntie Amanda, my name is Ray I recently did AncestryDNA found out I had 53% Native as I traced back what tribe I was from it was from my mother’s side and we are Lipan Apache from Texas my family gave me what he said is our tribe ID what do I do next?

Great! What an amazing gift that your family had some information on what tribe you’re from. Keep asking questions, especially from the elders and I’m sure you’ll find some helpful information.

Next thing, is to do your research:

You can do an Internet search using your Tribes name and key words like:

  • tribal clinic
  • museums
  • history
  • community events
  • visitor center
  • Indian/ Mission School
  • Indian Health Service

See what you can find. You’ll likely stumble upon how to enroll. Search for your tribes official website. For example, “Lipan Apache Texas Enrollment”.

Every tribe has their own requirements for enrollment. You’ll just have to check with your tribe for those specifics.

Generally, enrollment involves

  • Fill out Application
  • Provide Birth certificate/ Social Security Card
  • Provide Proof of lineage or Blood quantum
  • Application fee

Hope this helps! Best of luck!
