What is Cooling Down and Why It Is Important
Cooling down after a workout is as important as warming up. After physical activity, your heart is still beating faster than normal and body temperature is higher. Cooling down after exercising gives your body the chance to safely return back to rest. If you stop too fast after exercising, you could pass out or feel sick.
Summary and Recommendations
The main point of cooling down is to bring down your heart rate to a relaxed state. It should be done for both cardio and strength training exercises. After a cardio workout, you should jog slowly for about 5 minutes. After lifting weights, you should try and do some dynamic or static stretches. Follow some of these cool-down tips:
- Walk for about 5 minutes, or until your heart rate is at a relaxed level
- 5-10 minutes of static or dynamic stretching
- Hydrate and breathe
