1. Use Job Search Sites
Most employers use online websites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, and Linkedin to hire new employees. Often companies create listings, which will either take you to their company website to apply, or you can apply directly through the job search site.
As someone looking for a job, you can filter your search results to show specific job titles, companies, income, and locations. On some websites, like Indeed, you can upload your resume and automatically apply for jobs.
2. Use Your Networks
If you have a friend working somewhere that you want to work, ask if their company is hiring. If so, find out how to apply.
Additionally, your friends who are already working at a company can help you get hired by referring you to a specific position. Referring someone means you know them and can endorse their skills and abilities. Having a good referral can help you get hired.
3. Look for Help Wanted Signs
The next time you’re out, keep your eye out for help wanted signs. If you see one, does it seem like a business that interests you or that you can imagine yourself working at? If so, go inside and ask about the job, or use the provided contact information to ask for details about the position.
Sometimes there is an application for a particular job on a job search site, but sometimes, you can just stop by the business and speak to the hiring manager directly. If you speak with someone in person, make sure to get information about instructions for applying for the position. Sometimes this includes submitting a copy of your resume and a cover letter. Other times it just includes submitting your resume.
4. Be Prepared for an Interview
When you interview for a job, you should dress appropriately. More often than not, this means wearing business or business casual clothing, like button up shirts, blouses, slacks, or a skirt.
When going to an interview:
- Make sure you have access to a copy of your resume
- Bring a notepad to write down important details, and
- Come with a list of questions you have about the job
For some jobs, you may be hired immediately after the interview, so bring the appropriate identification with you, like your state ID or driver’s license and your social security card.
5. Check Out Your Tribal Nation’s Job Resources
Many tribal nations have job programs geared towards teenagers and young adults. These programs can include job trainings, summer work programs, and career fairs. You can usually find this information on your tribe’s website or by calling your tribal offices.
