How to Deal with a Breakup

There is not one way to magically get over a breakup completely or quickly. The truth is that break ups can feel horrible, and they often take time to recover from.

As someone who got broken up with very recently, here are a few things that helped me get over my breakup and made the recovery process a lot better.

1. Distance yourself from the relationship as much as possible

The first thing I immediately did after my breakup was block my ex on EVERYTHING – including on all of my social media accounts. Also, deleting any photos or conversations you had with your ex can help you avoid ruminating about them. Seeing old conversations and cute photos will only make it harder to get over them.

2. Take some time to notice and express your feelings

Although it is good to distract yourself and keep your mind busy right after a break up, it is also ok to take time to acknowledge and express your feelings. Rather than keeping your feelings bottled up, try talking to someone about the break up. Also, consider writing how you feel about the break up.

3. Do the things you love

You may have given up doing the things you loved during your relationship, as relationships can take up a lot of your time. For better or worse, I know I certainly did. However, doing the things you enjoy (like sports or art for example) can distract your mind and put you in a better mood. It can also help you connect with others who like the same activities as you!

4. Date yourself!

It’s going to be hard and there will be days where you’ll want to lay in bed, but it’s important that you try your best to treat yourself right. Self-care is very important, especially during a breakup. This could be anything from brushing your teeth to running a bath to working out. Try doing anything that you think will help you both take care of yourself and make you feel better. Even a little self-care and love towards yourself helps your physical and mental health!

 5. Spend time with the people you love

The number one thing that helped me the most was spending time with friends and family. Being around the ones you care about can increase your mood, distract you from your negative thoughts, and make you feel supported and loved.
