I don’t think I’m fully female. I feel only partly female. Does this make me two-spirited? I am also on the asexual and aromantic spectrums
Thank you for reaching out. As you know sex, gender and sexuality are three very different things and are also a deeply personal experience for everyone, not everyone who is on any of these spectrums identifies as Two Spirit, and many people do.
Understanding who you are will emerge over time, probably little by little. Right now the best thing you can do is give it time and explore and experience your feelings with an open mind.
Connect with others who may have had similar experiences. Start by doing your research:
- Check out We R Native’s website to learn more about LGBTQ2S.
- Also check out the Human Rights Campaign. They don’t have a Two-Spirit section, but you can check out their transgender and gender-expansive section, which includes resources for family members.
- Gender Spectrum – has video’s from young people on gender, learn more about genders around the world, and participate in discussion groups, or connect with other young people on The Lounge.
- A Resource Guide to Coming Out Guide also has a lot of good information.
Take some time digesting all this information you’ve learned. Process it. There’s no rush.
If you feel comfortable talking to your family or a close friend now, make sure to consider all the risks and benefits, keeping in mind that you are in charge of your coming out journey.
In the end if you learn that you are Two-Spirit, you may face some unique challenges but you can also find a lot of support and love along the way.
Best wishes,
Auntie Manda
