First dates can be both exciting and nerve-racking, whether it’s your first date ever or your first date with a new person. You might be asking yourself “What do I wear?” “How do I do my hair?!” “Will they like me for me?”
It’s okay to be anxious! But don’t worry. Here are some tips for preparing and not letting your nerves get the best of you.
Think Positively
First dates can seem terrifying. But it’s really mind over matter! Before your date, try getting into a positive mindset. You can do this by exercising, meditating, rocking out to your favorite music, or Face Timing your best friend while you get ready. You can even invite your bestie to pump you up as you prep! Whatever you do, just make sure that the time before your date is easy-going and puts you in a good headspace.
Give Yourself Enough Time to Get Ready
Being late for your first date isn’t fun. Neither is rushing to get ready. So, be sure to give yourself enough time! Make a list of what you want to accomplish before your date and figure out how long each activity will take. Your list might look something like this:
My date is at 7:00 PM:
- Shower and brush teeth at 5:00 PM
- Blow-dry hair at 5:30 PM
- Do makeup at 5:45 PM
- Eat a snack 6:15 PM
- Relax and text a friend 6:45 PM
- Wait for my date to pick me up!
While you get ready, think of some topics or questions you can ask your date to keep the conversation flowing.
Pick the Perfect Outfit
It might feel impossible to find the perfect first date outfit! But knowing where you’re going can help you choose what to wear. For example, a casual outfit like jeans and a nice top, or khakis with a button-up and tennis shoes can be good if you’re going bowling. If you’re going to dinner at a fancy restaurant, you might want to dress your best attire. It all depends on your preference, what makes you comfortable, and what you’re doing.
Pack some Protection
You never know what might happen on a first date. If sex is on your mind, be sure to pack some protection, like condoms or dental dams. This doesn’t mean you have to have sex, but it’s always good to be safe!
Keep Your Loved Ones in the Know
Your date might be with a close friend or someone you feel comfortable with. Despite how kind they are and how safe they make you feel, let your close friends and family know where you’re going just to be extra safe. Also, keep them updated on where you’re at throughout your date, so they know you are okay.
